Los Angeles police officers say they've seen an uptick in car crashes attributed to street racing. Because of that, the department is rolling out a new task force to crack down on the illegal sport. Chris Martinez has more.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk-3DAvr6as

Three people are dead because two drivers decided that Interstate 5 in Los Angeles, California was a great place to have a street race. The details of this accident are pretty graphic, we will warn you now, but with the growing concern over street racing, especially in the southern California area, we feel that it is important to showcase just how destructive letting cars have at it outside of a controlled area really is. If you’re always concerned about why the police and politicians are constantly concerned with high-performance cars, gatherings, and so on, here’s your reason…
Just after midnight, a Dodge Challenger driven by 35-year-old Dealio Lockhard of Whittier, California paired off with a Dodge Charger driven by an as-of-yet unknown driver on southbound I-5. During the race, Lockhart’s Challenger ran up on a slower vehicle and tried to pass, but when the slower car merged into the same lane, he hit the brakes and lost control of the car. The Challenger struck a UPS semi-tractor, causing it to crash through a center divider and become airborne. The tractor struck a Nissan Sentra, shearing off the roof of the car, killing two passengers and putting the other two into the hospital in critical condition. When the truck landed in the oncoming lane, it struck several vehicles before coming to rest on top of an SUV. In total, eight cars were involved, four people are in critical condition in the hospital and three people, the two passengers in the Nissan and the driver of the UPS truck, are dead. Because Interstate 5 in the Los Angeles Metro area seemed like a racetrack.
As it is, there are already individuals blowing up the CHP Southern Division’s Facebook page, angered that Lockhart, who was arrested and is currently facing vehicular manslaughter charges, should be punished even further, with one commenter noting, “Manslaughter? Is that the best you can do?” It isn’t difficult to figure out why the public is upset over this: three dead, four seriously injured because two individuals, one who is probably in hiding while trying to figure out what to do with his dark-colored Charger, couldn’t take it to a track. We know well about how many racetracks there are in Southern California. You aren’t telling us anything we don’t already know. And we know that there will always be that enclave of people who will insist that the streets will be the only place they race. There were better solutions for this issue, but that’s an argument that can happen later. Right now, there are families that won’t be seeing loved ones because two guys took it to the Interstate. Take note of the report: the reporter says “drag racer”. Don’t think for a second that the media cares about the difference between what happened here and what goes on at tracks across the country.

More information has come to light since this story was posted:

  • The driver admitted to authorities when he was in custody that he was street racing the other car.
  • The UPS driver who perished in the wreck was a 30 year employee of the company
  • KCAL-TV in California is reporting that the speeds of the cars were in the 85-90 mph range
  • Commerce, California is about eight miles west of Los Angeles
  • CHP officers have said that the female victims in the Nissan appeared to be in their 20s.
  • There are currently no leads and no information regarding the driver of the second car.

WHAT IS STREET RACING? The debate of whether or not they were “street racing” seems to be the hot topic among enthusiasts. Whether you define “street racing” as having a flagman and a starting line or two cars trying to get from point A to point B faster than the other is inconsequential. The point here is that two drivers were racing each other on a public street, and lives were lost as a result of this act.
Lockhart admitted to racing, and the other driver fled the scene, which, if caught, will bring ever more charges to him. It’s time we stop using the excuse of not having local racetracks as a reason for racing on the streets. Find one, travel to one, or help your community create an event, but please stop racing on public roadways – it’s just not worth the risk to yourself, or others. STREET RACING

Investigators Seek Public’s Help in Identifying Second Suspect Responsible for City of Commerce Triple-Fatal Traffic Collision; $36,000 Reward Offered

Saturday, February 27, 2016, was a day in which the dynamics of numerous families were changed forever.  As their loved ones travelled for pleasure and work on Interstate Highway 5, they were unaware of two vehicles negligently competing on the same stretch of highway in an illegal street race.

As the two competing drivers raced southbound on Interstate Highway 5 at a high rate of speed, Suspect Vehicle #1 attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle ahead of him and lost control.  Suspect Vehicle #1 struck a United Parcel Service commercial tractor hauling a package-laden, 52’ trailer driven by Victim Richard Scott Treadway.  Victim Treadway lost control of the vehicle, crossed all southbound lanes of traffic and was forced into the northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 5.

The delivery truck bursting into traverse traffic caused a chain reaction collision on the northbound side involving several additional vehicles.  The delivery truck impacted several northbound vehicles, one of which was a 2014 Nissan Sentra carrying amusement park coworkers and friends, Victim Michelle Littlefield and Victim Brian Lewandowski.

The delivery truck overturned and rested across several northbound and southbound lanes.  It caught fire and burned with Victim Richard Scott Treadway still inside.
Victims Richard Scott Treadway, Michelle Littlefield and Brian Lewandowski were all pronounced dead at the scene.
Victims Anthony Miramontes, Alfonso Murillo, Thomas Won, and Nicole Ruiz suffered injuries ranging from moderate to major.
The collision site was littered with broken and burning vehicles, twisted metal and pieces of vehicles for hundreds of feet on both sides of the highway.  Traffic was impacted for hours as first responders helped the victims, and detectives inventoried the site in detail.
Suspect #1 was identified as Dealio Lockhart, a 35-year-old resident of Whittier.  It was determined he drove one of the vehicles involved in the illegal street race, which was a 2012 Dodge Challenger.  Suspect Lockhart was detained at the scene then transported to the Inmate Reception Center, where he was booked for the charge of Murder.  He is being held in lieu of $6.2 million bail.
The driver of Suspect Vehicle #2 did not stop to render assistance to the victims.  Instead, the vehicle was last seen driving southbound on Interstate Highway 5 from the scene of the collision.
Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives and California Highway Patrol investigators are asking the public for any available information about Suspect #2.  The vehicle is described as a late-model black or dark blue Dodge Charger with tinted windows.
A $35,000 reward is being offered, in exchange for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of Suspect #2 for the injuries of Victims Anthony Miramontes, Alfonso Murillo, Thomas Won, and Nicole Ruiz; and the murders of Victims Richard Scott Treadway, Michelle Littlefield and Brian Lewandowski.  The reward money is comprised of offers from the following:
·        $10,000 from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
·        $5,000 from Six Flags Entertainment Corporation
·        $10,000 from the United Parcel Service
·        $10,000 from Teamsters Local 396
Crime Stoppers is also offering a $1,000 reward, in exchange for information leading to the apprehension of Suspect #2.
If you have information about the second suspect or the unidentified Dodge Charger, please call East Los Angeles California Highway Patrol Investigator Frank Fonseca at 323-890-4600 or 800-TELL-CHP (800-835-5247); or Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives Marc Boskovich and Louie Aguilera at 323-890-5500.

COMMERCE - A fiery crash this morning on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Commerce that claimed the lives of two men and a woman was caused by motorists racing on the freeway, authorities said.
In the aftermath of the crash, one of the motorists, Whittier resident Dealio Lockhart, 35, was arrested and could face vehicular manslaughter charges, the CHP reported.
The 5 Freeway remained closed in both directions this afternoon at Washington Boulevard as officials investigated the crash and worked to remove the debris.
The collision on the southbound 5 Freeway at Garfield Avenue took place just after midnight, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.
Lockhart, driving a Dodge Challenger, was racing a Dodge Charger southbound, when he saw a slower moving vehicle ahead and was attempting to get around the vehicle, at the same time that vehicle was trying to move to the right, the CHP said.
Lockhart applied his brakes, lost control of his car and struck the left side of a UPS tractor trailer, which became airborne, hitting a gray Nissan and shearing off the top of the Nissan.
The tractor trailer came to rest on top of a red Ford Explorer on the northbound side of the freeway, north of Washington Boulevard. The tractor trailer immediately became engulfed in flames.
``It was fully engulfed and there were explosions at the scene from the truck which could have been tires exploding or the gas tanks,'' Villalobos said. ``We just don't know yet.''
Debris from the collision struck a Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Silverado, which were traveling on the northbound side. The driver of the tractor trailer -- a man -- and two people inside the Nissan were pronounced dead at the scene.
Paramedics rushed two other people to County/USC Medical Center with major injuries, the CHP reported.
L.A. County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas told City News Service that two more people suffered minor injuries and were transported to another hospital.
Debris was spread across all the southbound lanes. The crash also created a nightmare for motorists, backing up north and southbound traffic on
the freeway for miles, according to the CHP.
A SigAlert was issued closing all northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway at Washington Boulevard at approximately 12:14 a.m. That full freeway closure was still in effect this afternoon, and was expected to last until 8 p.m.
Anyone with any information regarding the crash was asked to call the CHP's East Los Angeles office at (323) 980-4600 -CNS
So when my Dad got my watch back from the hospital and he gave it back to me; I couldn't help but notice that it wasn't working. That's when I realized that it stopped at the exact time of the accident that night. I couldn't believe it.  11:56  Feb 26 2016

To be honest, a question that keeps on running through my mind is "Why and how?"
I still can't understand why this happened to me and my friends. There are times when I wish I was awake during the accident, so I could fill in a really big gap inside of me. I've been wanting to know exactly how the accident happened.
How is it possible that the UPS trailer on the southbound lanes loses control from a speeding car hitting it on its side, ends up crashing on the center median, going airborne onto the northbound lanes and shearing off the top of our car??? Out of all the cars traveling on the northbound lanes... why our car? What exactly happened that night?

I’m not sure why racing on a public road full of other cars and trucks doesn’t seem like a terrible idea to people, but it is. If simple logic doesn’t get the concept across, maybe this wreck, caused by a race between a Challenger and a Charger, will. Three are dead, and the carnage of the multi-car wreck closed California’s 5 freeway for the better part of a day, according to police...............

REWARD OFFERED TO FIND DRIVER IN 5 FREEWAY FATAL CAR RACING CRASH

Street racing is being blamed for a multivehicle crash on the 5 Freeway in Commerce early Saturday that left three people dead and shut down the highway in both directions.
Lockhart, who was driving a Dodge Challenger, was racing the driver of a Dodge Charger at the time of the crash, authorities said. Lockhart tried to swerve around a slower vehicle, applied his brakes and lost control of his car, crashing into the UPS truck and triggering the fiery pileup.

Dealio Lockhart, 35, pleaded not guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and four counts of reckless driving causing injury in connection with the fiery, six-vehicle crash that took place just after midnight on Feb. 27, on the southbound 5 Freeway, near Triggs Street, just after midnight Feb. 27, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Jane Robison said.
He was driving a Dodge Challenger and racing Dodge Charger when the crash occurred, according to investigators from the California Highway Patrol.

HERE IS A THOUGHT - Before it is TOO late
Just goes to show how precious life is and how a loved one could be taken away at any time. Other than my wife, my best friend of nearly 48 years was killed because some azzhole crossed the center line, doing about 70 m.p.h. and hit him head on while he was riding his motorcycle. I have few regrets in life, however one is never telling my friend that I loved him. Being a guy, afraid of loosing my "MAN CARD" I let opportunity after opportunity pass by without saying anything. Now it is lost forever. Never let an opportunity slip away to tell those you care about how you feel, you may never get the chance again..........

If all of this isn't enough to convince ANYONE that street racing is not only stupid, it's selfish. You've chosen to disregard not only your own safety, but the safety of everyone that you encounter along the way--pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, cars, trucks, semi trucks. There are so many people now on the roads that street racing is like playing Russian roulette with a gun that only has 2 bullets missing. It's not a matter of "if"...only "when". Think twice. Then think again. Not. Worth. It. What if it were YOUR family in that Nissan coming home from Disneyland? Still think street racing is a victimless crime? May the friends and families affected by this meaningless tragedy find comfort...and may those who did not survive be remembered each and every day.

Suspected street racer arrested in crash that killed three and shut down 5 Freeway

Street racing is being blamed for a multivehicle crash on the 5 Freeway in Commerce early Saturday that left three people dead and shut down the highway in both directions.

The drivers of two vehicles were racing in the southbound lanes near Washington Boulevard shortly after midnight Friday, when one of them lost control of his vehicle and veered into a UPS big-rig, authorities said. The UPS truck slammed into the center divider, then flipped over into the northbound lanes and collided with several oncoming vehicles, causing an explosion, said Sgt. Luis Mendoza of the California Highway Patrol.

The violent crash is one in a string of deadly street race accidents in recent years that prompted law enforcement crackdowns and talk of new state legislation to stiffen penalties for illegal car modifications.
Although there are no statistics on street racing incidents, local police say they appear to be on the rise, with some racers using social media to coordinate matches and stay ahead of authorities.
"They jump on any one of their social media sites, only to move the problem to one of our partnering jurisdictions," Los Angeles police Capt. John McMahon told The Times last year in a story about street racing.

Teens Coming Home From Disneyland, UPS Driver ID'd As Victims In 5 Freeway Crash

Three people were killed and at least four others injured around midnight Friday after authorities say a street race on Interstate 5 in Los Angeles County led to a fiery crash involving up to eight vehicles

Lockhart is suspected of street racing with a suspect in a Dodge Charger shortly after midnight Saturday in Commerce. One of the cars lost control, causing a UPS delivery truck to go airborne and land over the center median.

One of the alleged street racers, identified as Dealio Lockhart, 35, of Whittier, was taken into custody and is facing vehicular manslaughter (now murder) charges. A second driver fled the scene and is at large, according to the CHP.

  • One of the street racers has been arrested; another fled the scene

Two of Littlefield’s friends came to the downtown Los Angeles courthouse for the hearing.
Romina Rosero called what had happened a “devastating tragedy” and said she is “really suffering.”
“Her family is very devastated. They’re very pained,” she told reporters. “At the same time, they really emphasize that they do not hold any ill will or hatred towards Mr. Lockhart. Her family is handling it in a very admirable manner.”
Another one of her friends, Patricia Cardenas, said, “It was an act of an irresponsible man. Even though it won’t bring Michelle back to us, still we ask for justice.” Story Here

Street racing in Los Angeles fueled by social media
Local authorities estimate that street racing in on the rise in recent years, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times. Police attribute the growing numbers in part to the ability of racers to connect on social media to plan their next race. Another factor may be the popularity of the movie series “Fast and Furious,” as well as numerous video games that glorify street racing.
It is difficult to know just how far-reaching the consequences of street racing might be, since casualties related to the practice are not diligently tracked by the insurance industry or the government. However, reports in the media have shown street racing takes a severe toll on drivers, passengers and others that become the innocent victims of races, including the victims of this particular tragedy.

It's a world that many people have only been exposed to through movies such as The Fast and the Furious: the hardcore faction of the car culture dominated by illegal street racers. The underground world of 'burnouts', 'donuts', and street racing attracts thousands to floating parties. Racers say they'll get off the streets if they get a plot of land dedicated to their illegal gathering.

Fair use is a doctrine in the United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as for commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching or scholarship.  It provides for the legal, non-licensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another author’s work under a four-factor balancing test.  The term “fair use” originated in the United States.  A similar principle, fair dealing, exists in some other common law jurisdictions.  Civil law jurisdictions have other limitations and exceptions to copyright.
